I had to publish four highlights lists at the beginning of this year, in order to be fairly even with 2018. After that, I simply did not care about new music for weeks and instead rummaged through my collection, looking for albums I did not listen to for a long time. HAMMERFALL, STRATOVARIUS and BLIND GUARDIAN spent weeks rotating in my player, filling me with Power Metal nostalgia.
Why am I telling you this? Because I had long since resigned myself to never feeling the same enthusiasm for this genre as I did back in the 90s. But luckily I was wrong! Because WARRIOR PATH actually give me the long forgotten feeling of wanting to discover new Power Metal for me. And that, even though the Greeks do not even play pure Power Metal and are not a real band after all.
The song material written over many years by guitarist Andreas Sinanoglou would also go down well as epic Heavy Metal, which is often reminiscent of MANOWAR and even IRON MAIDEN. But the usage of keyboards, extensive solos and leads, high tempo, fantasy-themed lyrics and almost cheesy ballads predominate, and thus the catchy songs of the studio project are much better assigned to Euro Power Metal.
A look at the studio lineup also reveals two distinct Power Metal personalities. First, Yannis Papadopoulos from BEAST IN BLACK could be won as the vocalist, who adapts perfectly to the song material. Second, there is Bob Katsionis, a Power Metal veteran who already played the keys and strings in numerous bands (including REVOLUTION RENAISSANCE) and still does (including FIREWIND).
This album is clearly a matter of the heart, and one can only wish its creator that the studio project WARRIOR PATH actually develops into a proper band with a stable lineup and maybe even a tour.
If you do not care for Power Metal in general, then WARRIOR PATH is most certainly not your cup of tea. But if you are looking for a band that understands what makes up the genre, without exaggerating its stylistic devices, then your search is finally over!
